I dont know about you ... but for me starting the New Year means making a list - or should I say, many lists. Before I get to my new lists for 2012, I want to share a completed project from last year's list. Do you remember those dining chairs my friend gave me? I turned two of them into side chairs for my living room - they are perfect for pulling up to the table for extra seats - and I turned the captain's chair into a great 'library browsing' chair for my guest room .... here you go... the before and after ....

I was very happy that I got this project completed before Christmas - that was a BIG accomplishment for this year!

Lucky Girl

I am a lucky girl ......

Four years ago I received the opportunity to take on the administrative side of putting some art classes together in Virginia Beach. I had no idea how to begin, or whether it would be successful. Having just completed the 10th class --- I think I've got the hang of it... maybe ....

(although there's something to learn from each one)

.... just back from another wonderful week of art with Ros Stallcup and a great group of women! If you know Ros, then you know how much she brings to class -- great projects, great instruction --

sweet personality and lots of fun!

But there's also something really special about taking these classes at the beach..

whether its cloudy, sunny,

chilly, warm, or rainy (even snow-like last Feb) --

the beach gives me a good feeling --- makes me feel calm and revitalized all at the same time.

This past week was no exception.

Make no mistake ... we are there to work (in between all our fun:)

you see ..... we're all doing the same project......

but there's room for individual expression

wouldnt you love for this to be your garden,

and walk right out to the beach?

where else can you hear someone say,

"Oh, your rust is lovely" ???

It can be a special time for mother/daughter bonding

Miss Opal is 95!!

this mother/daughter team met in the middle --

one came from way south, and one from the north

I got a wonderful, warm surprise from the group ..

still floating on air

there's time for special friendships to grow...

and then there's the picture that says it all.....

Creating Jeweled Jeans - step one

Jeweled Jeans has moved to the next level!!

I was thrilled when my friend, Marie, offered to host a

'Jeweled Jeans' party!!

She set up the most beautiful party ---

with yummy food, and sparkling drinks ..

Lots of friends came..

bringing a pair of jeans with them...

We ate and drank... talked and laughed ...

They looked, touched, and chatted about all the samples I brought...

and then chose their favorite design...

I took them all home to 'create'

Today (Hurricane Irene) was the perfect day to work on this project.

I set up a work table in my living room....

Now all the designs are patterned :) Whew!

can't wait to show you that!!!

Fancy Garden Glass

Yes, MORE garden glass...

I have really been biten by this bug!

I spent a weekend in VA with my BFF...

We shopped all the thrift stores ..

for GLASS, of course

These little ones with the blue ruffle tops are hose guides for her garden

They will go onto a stake in the ground to make them sturdy.

No one will have cuter hose guides!!

here is my project -- just a bit of color for the garden...

I'm not finished yet ... stay tuned

More Garden Glass

Garden glass ornaments are now my new favorite craft -----
and I bet you'll fall in love with them too.
Let me show you a few 'lessons' I learned along the way ....

Here's my table of cast off glass, just waiting for the right inspiration.

this one ends with a bowl so small birds and butterflies will have water

There are no limits to creativity ...

---saucers, stemware, bowls and lids--

let your imagination run wild

any combination of colors and shapes can work

Here's a pleasing combination of clear and textured glass--

made with vases, ashtrays, dessert dish, candle holder

and look at this elegant tower -
vase, saucer, mercury glass votive, candy dish,
candle holder and stray lid

--My last piece of advice is to work with a buddy,
an extra pair of hands can prevent a lot of casualties

Fortunately, this piece can be reconstructed
and we have learned a valuable lesson ...

'Trial and Error' --- the best teacher of ALL!

Garden Glass Project # 1

I have a love of all things glass. It is my weakness, and I'm drawn to it at vintage shops, flea markets, and high end crystal - plus stained glass, colored marbles, and on and on -- I love the way light shines through glass ...

On a recent thrift store shopping trip I found this glass bowl ...

I thought ... hmmmmm......

wonder if I could turn this into a gazing ball?

This might be just the ticket ...

I covered it in paper and cut a hole through the top

While I was at it I sprayed a little pink glass cup too

Just to see what it would do

I think they are both great

I havent found just the right spot in my garden yet ...

but until I do, I think it looks great on the steps...

Now .... what can I do with this yard sale lamp??

Any ideas??

Hydrangea Chair

First, I stripped the many layers of paint ...

Then I used flat spray - to give a good base coat..

It took a while for 'inspiration' to grab me ...

but eventually I decided on white hydrangeas

This is a great place to unleash your creative side ..

I take a look around at all of their finished projects, trying to get a little inspiration ...

....found a stepping stone - and got started

Cut Flowers ..... To Go

Just had to share with you this idea that came from my son -- and I think it's brilliant!! When we met for Mother's Day he brought me cut flowers -- which was so nice, and made me smile ...... but ..... he knew I'd have to get them home and he brought a pitcher of water to keep them alive on the trip. This turned out to be a brilliant idea, because ..... I could secure the pitcher by passing the seat belt right through the handle and it didnt budge an inch!! I only kept an inch or so of water so there was no danger of it splashing and, as you can see - they made it home in perfect condition ...

I put the pitcher in the back seat

secured it with the seat belt - around the pitcher and through the handle ...

added the flowers - and drove home ...

Here they are, safe at home in a beautiful vase for me to enjoy!

So....... now I'm thinking ...... what else would transport better in a pitcher that can be secured and safe from spilling??? especially if your pitcher has a lid -- how about fruit salad?

Cant wait to hear your ideas ....

In honor of this year's Preakness,

I created two new tote bag designs

featuring the Black-Eyed Susan...
Maryland's state flower - and the official flower of the Preakness

This year marks the 136th running of The Preakness Stakes traditionally held on the third Saturday in May at Pimlico Race Course just outside Baltimore, MD. The Preakness Stakes has been termed "The Run for the Black-Eyed Susans" because a blanket of Black-eyed Susans is placed around the winner's neck. (the horse's neck, of course:)

The interesting part is ....... Black-Eyed Susans do not bloom in Maryland until June or July!
No worries -- they just take a little 'creative license' and come up with a great look-alike instead. Some years they have used daisies, others chrysanthemums. Once the center is darkened who can tell the difference? It works!

and just one more thing......
(in case you want to plan a party;)

Black-Eyed Susan Cocktail Punch

1 - 1/4 cup vodka
4 cups orange juice
1 - 1/4 cup light rum
ice ring
3/4 cup triple sec
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
4 cups pineapple juice

Chill all ingredients.
Just before serving combine in a punch bowl.
Unmold ice ring and float in bowl. Serve in tall glasses. Makes 10 large servings.

Pretty Words -- from the heart

Beautiful Words - Beautiful Letters -- I love them both. I love writing beautiful words that have a special meaning. So I was happy when my BFF asked me to write her favorite saying on an out-building at her farm.

We printed it in a style we both loved

I enlarged it to use as a guide

Her husband gave me a level line

Next comes a flourish of leaves (and one special flower)

.... I measured and centered the words ....

and then I started writing ......

(in between moments of holding my breath :)

And now here is my secret, a very simple secret:

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly;

what is essential is invisible to the eye ..

I think the Little Prince would be happy ....

Inspiration - when you least expect it

What inspires you to be creative? For me, inspiration is literally EVERYWHERE! I am always snapping pictures of people, places, and things that spark an idea I want to tuck away for future reference.

I love this little glass topped table.... I can just see it painted - or etched - on a side table for the patio - or how about a mirror? or maybe on tile, like the table below??

I would love to be invited to this dinner --- does it inspire you to drink another glass of wine?

What a simple idea to create a cozy evening

would you use this for a baby shower, afternoon tea, or seaside dinner?

Classic black and white!

What would you store in these pretty boxes....

Office/craft supplies? Fancy Hats? Dishes or glassware? Magazines?

All Scrubbies - are not created equal...

Did you know that scotch brite scrubbies come in different grits, just like sandpaper? Yes, they do ... Here's a chart that shows the various colors and their corresponding grits..

SCOTCHBRITE GRIT CHART

7445 - White pad, called Light Duty Cleansing - (1000)

7448 - Light Grey, called Ultra Fine Hand - (600-800)

6448 - Green, called Light Duty Hand Pad - (600)

7447 - Maroon pad, called General Purpose Hand - (320-400)

6444 - Brown pad, called Extra Duty Hand - (280-320)

7446 - Dark Grey pad, called Blending Pad (180-220)

7440 - Tan pad, called Heavy Duty Hand Pad - (120-150)

The white -1000 grit - is perfect for applying paste wax. Just cut a square, keep it in your wax tin and use it over and over.

Light grey - 600 to 800 grit - is great to polish and 'de-nub'. After you stain your piece you don't want to sand in between coats of finish (or you will go through the stain) - but you might have raised wood grain that makes it feel rough. Well, you can just use light grey scotch brite to give a smooth base for your next coat of finish..

The green - light duty 600 grit - is the 'all purpose' choice for everything from ceramics to scrubbing pots.

The heavy duty grits are a big help when using paint strippers, or getting through a tough finish..

Now that you know all the choices, you can pick the perfect one for your next project!!!

Work Smart -- Half Rounds & Portable Table

I've learned a lot of smart tips while working at Robert Ortiz Studios - http://www.ortizstudios.com/ - and lots of them are just as valuable for crafts and DIY projects as they are to the professional woodworker.

Tip #1 --- Half Rounds ---Once you see how smart it is to use 'half rounds' you will wonder how you ever got along without them. Half rounds can be described as a wooden dowel literally cut in half! Use them to lift your project off the work table - which provides just enough space so you can reach the sides and ends neatly. I suggest you have at least 4 - maybe 6 - half rounds.... ask your hardware store to cut them 24-30 inches long. A sturdy mailing tube is a great way to store them - you can even store your yardsticks and levels in the same place.

Here half rounds are shown with the flat side up --

but you actually use them with the flat side down....

This bubinga top is lifted so I can easily reach the sides and ends..

Tip #2 -- Portable Work Table -- Don't have a work table? No worries - for about $50 or less you can easily assemble a portable work table. Invest in two folding saw horses and half a sheet of plywood (2'x4'). You can set up this table in minutes wherever it's needed, and then store it away without taking up valuable floor space. Add a pretty table cloth and you also have an extra buffet table.. and who doesn't need an extra table sometimes?

Sandpaper Trick

Every time I share this sandpaper 'trick' with the art classes they LOVE it. Once you see how simple it is you will be amazed...

1) start with a full sheet of sandpaper -- cut into 4 equal pieces

2) fold and score each quarter sheet into quarters - cut one score just to the middle

3) fold one flap up, then over, and down -- now you have 4 clean sides of sandpaper -

you can fold and re-fold to a clean side as needed

Remember - the only area of your piece that is being sanded is the space just under your fingertips ...

Sand in the direction of the wood grain - but align your fingers perpendictular - so that your fingertips are moving sideways with the grain and not up and down with the grain -- the reason is that each fingertip has a different strength and applies different pressure. If you go up and down you will essentially create valleys.

Not only will these tips give you a better finished product they will also save you money

Here I am, once again, sending out a hearty "Thank You" to Melissa and the staff of Salon At Chestertown (www.salonatchestertown.com ) They have been generous enough to host two more of my art pieces.

"Blue Morning Glories" welcomes the clients as they are offered coffee and snacks at Salon

"Red Geraniums" keep company at Melissa's station.

Both of these pieces started as old windows, then I removed the glass and replaced it with mirrors.

Each design is painted right on the mirror, baked to be permanent, and re-installed in the frame.

It's tricky to take photos of mirrors, even when the reflections show a nice background. Still, I think the art work comes through very well here. If you have a window-less room, or a dark wall, or need a mirror with a little pizazzz -- then here you go.....

Protect with Varnish

Some of you know that I work at http://www.ortizstudios.com/ - where Bob creates the most gorgeous furniture you have ever seen (REALLY!!) --- and I do all the oil finishes. There are a variety of finishes we use on the furniture, depending on the look and durability we want to achieve.

This is the piece we just finished last week - beautiful computer/office cabinet of mahogany and wenge. I used Tried & True linseed oil - 5 coats on the top and 3 on the case.

But your artwork deserves a beautiful protection too - and here's one method that our friend Kathy recommends........

1) Apply seven coats of matte varnish. Do not sand between coats. Let each coat dry 20 minutes. After seven coats let dry overnight.

2) With 600 grit black wet-dry sandpaper dipped in one cup of water with one drop of dishing washing liquid (any brand) gently rub with the grain. Be careful to use a gentle touch, especially on edges or over dots. This dulls down any shine.

3) Wipe with a paper towel to dry.

4) Using #0000 steel wool pad and neutral Kiwi shoe polish (use a good amount) rub in hard.

5) Using a clean piece of #0000 steel wool wipe off excess shoe polish.

6) Buff with a clean soft cloth.

7) Admire and Enjoy!!

Painted Furniture Workshop

What do you think of when I say "Painted Furniture Workshop"? Well, it's kinda hard to describe --- especially since every one is totally different. So let me just tell you about the one we had recently in Virginia Beach. Beth Wagner is our very talented teacher - in this workshop she's more like our leader and mentor. Each person comes to class with their 'blank slate' - sometimes they even have a design idea for it, but even if they dont ... when they get to class - all it takes is a little 'brainstorming' with Beth --- the creative energy starts to flow and your idea is born! The first day is all about backgrounds, prep work, and developing our ideas. As we work, there's a great group energy - we are inspired by each other -- all under the guidance of Beth's creative talents. We start with a little idea, it grows --- we build it, and it grows again.

This little two-tier table was first painted green, then painted white. Once Cindy sanded the edges, the green layer came through to give it interest and dimension. But she didnt stop there -- she added border details and roses on both top and shelf. She's says she'll use this as a side table in her great room ---- I can tell you, everyone will think its too pretty to put a drink on ..

Just look at this little table - What a great design!

Notice the subtle detail around the border.

This is a gift her husband will surely appreciate - and she painted him a jewelry box to match!

We couldnt have a class with Beth without featuring roses .... here's just two beautiful examples.

Kathy's project was a fireplace screen. First, she taped off a border and painted a soft multi-colored background to the center. Then she re-taped it and painted the edge blue. She took another step and added a stencil design over the border. For the final hooray she painted a glass vase filled with flowers for the center piece. This is already an heirloom her family will treasure ....

Look at this sweet little travel trunk with a beautiful dome top. The lucky little girl who receives this can fill it with dress-up clothes now and memories later - for it's certain she will cherish it always.

The background of the trunk is painted with soft dreamy, cloud-like colors. You can see nose-gay flowers and ribbons spilling from the corners - and very lovely personalization on the top -- what a treasure!

The design on this bar stool grew from the inspiration paper you see posted on the wall. It's a black background with all grey and silver designs -- a little silver leaf and it will really sparkle.

It seems that little girls' dreams were the inspiration for a few pieces in this class. Here you just see the door to a little storage cabinet - but each side and the top were painted with whimsical sea creatures and bubbles. What little mermaid wouldn't love this??

And, finally ----

here's the proud teacher taking a shot of our group.

Each person went home with a unique work of art and more than a few ideas for future projects.

Don't you just love when they call your number and you've won the prize? Well....... I can tell you that the girls in my art classes do love it.

Ever since I've been sponsoring these classes in Va Beach I've drawn a name (or number) for a winner each day.

Sometimes they win a bottle of wine --- that's always a welcome gift.

One class received blown glass mermaid ornaments,

and one class received ceramic mugs that can be painted.

Last week I gave out ceramic brush holders for the second time --

and I think this was everyone's favorite! It surely was the favorite of

Joyce, Frances, Kathy and Maureen

they were this year's winners!!!

It has 4 compartments - two tall and two short -

which can hold and separate brushes and painting tools.

It works just as well to hold bathroom supplies, or kitchen utensils

(but, really --- no painter is going to give it up for any other use:)

This ceramic technique is called crystals -

and the name of this paint is "Monsoon Seas"

which went right along with our Dolphin theme for this class.

So now I have a few months to come up with the next great door prize---

(I'm open to suggestions :)

and not just because they hosted a lovely showing of my traditional Baltimore Screens --- although I loved that too. They have a gallery wall that compliments the artwork perfectly, and they are generous enough to invite local artists to show their work. Twelve Years!!

Wow - you know what they say about 'time flies when you are having fun'......

Well, I've been having fun working at Ortiz Studios (http://www.ortizstudios.com/) for twelve years now!!

And, believe me, that time has gone by fast ...

I don't know the exact date I started, but it was early March - and every year Bob indulges my sentimental side with a little celebration.

This year we had cupcakes on Wednesday and went out to lunch on Thursday.

Thank you, Bob .....

Looking forward to the next twelve :)

BFF - Priceless!!!

I count my lucky stars for all the friends in my life! and I think its pretty cool that I've had lots of these friends for a loooooonnngg, loooonnnggg time ---- but there's only one who's been my friend for 50 years!!

Even though we have lived in different states for 40 years, we have always taken the time to keep in close touch. Years ago that meant letters - sometimes 10-15 pages long - and, more recently, emails nearly every day -- but there's nothing like a little face time. So, on the spur of the moment, we took a day off and each drove halfway to meet for lunch and a nice long chat. Time spent with her is ..... priceless!

Spring Flowers

Punxsutawney Phil said we would have an early spring this year. Well, even so, I cant wait for flowers in the garden ..... So I designed a Spring Flower Tote -----

to tide me over until the real thing shows up.

and another - just for good measure

Snowflakes and Paint Brushes

We woke up Thursday to a blanket of snow

It wasnt a lot of snow, just enough to close schools --

no matter ... we were cozy and happy in our paint room ..

Wednesday was a great day! --- Jackhammers, and all.....

Ros shouted a little louder

We listened a little harder

We had a lot of laughs,

We may have had some headaches, or the jitters, but ....

At the end of the day we still had great projects!

..........and a story to tell :)

Sometimes we need a little extra help,

and sometimes we just smile with our friends ...

Virginia Beach greeted us with a day of sun for the start of this year's art class.

We had a totally fun day - painting a meadow garden with Ros

Heavy concentration, and lots of smiles - makes a great day - great finished project

The Woodworking Show

When I found out the subject of the Martha Stewart Show was woodworking I got excited. I fashioned a protective sleeve for the coatrack shelf I made a few years ago and -- with Eileen's help -- managed to get it through the train and to the hotel without a hitch. It was all worth it to be in the audience with my woodworking project!!

All 14 woodworkers in the audience were happy to have a picture with Martha and their prized piece.

Better late than never???

In October I was lucky enough to set out on a truly great adventure!! I won a great prize when in the audience of the Martha Stewart Show and my travel buddy, Eileen, and I set out for a 13 day excursion. We started at JFK, where Eileen got us invited into the VIP lounge of Singapore Air. That was pretty nice - we toasted the start of our trip with wine and nibbles in a plush, chic setting, looking out to majestic airbirds coming and going. Our first leg took us to Frankfurt. As we strolled the city on the way to dinner, we happened upon the Opera Hall ...

The next day we took the train and had a guided tour of Heidleberg - the city and the castle ..

The Captain of our solar boat ride posed for pictures ...

Couldnt go to Germany without a sample of food and drink ...

and ... of course, dessert!!!

Two days in Germany -- 12 hr flight -- and here we are in Singapore!! At Raffles Hotel everyone gets Singapore Slings upon arrival!! Nice ...

We were treated to many wonderful meals, sightseeing, massages, and high tea -- but a definite highlight was dinner at The Wild Rocket - where Chef Willin Low made a 6 course dinner just for us!!!

While shopping on Arab Street we met Moe, a fashion designer searching for fabrics for his next collection!!

As we said goodbye to our grand aventure the doorman from Raffles wishes us safe travels.

But ... we're not headed home just yet. We are on our way to Bali ... a relaxing retreat at the Four Seasons in the jungle ...

A few days in the calm, spiritual surroundings of Bali and we were ready to brave that long 24 hr flight home -- did we really travel 3/4 around the world? or was it a dream? It was really a dream come true!!

Although we had a wonderful Christmas at our house --- the New Year is here and it's time to put Christmas behind us and look toward 2011....

I was inspired to start this blog last year after the great experience of visiting New York with a fabulous group of women called Dreamers Into Doers - sponsored by Martha Stewart's website - because while I was there I won a trip to Singapore. So exciting -- but even better than that (and THAT was pretty great!) - but even better was the community spirit, encouragement, support and love of the women in the group ...

And the best news of ALL --- we are going back again this year!! I am excited to see so many of my Dreamer Sisters - and meet lots more, because this year our group will be twice as big. MSLO has organized two days of workshops to help us all grow in our business and personal lives - and Martha is one of the scheduled speakers! As I looked back over the year I see I made 37 blog posts -- so my resolution for this year is to post at least once a week --- I hope you all will stay tuned and travel with me this year as I focus on my artwork and creative side. Happy New Year!!

It's never too early to plan for great opportunities in art. Some of my favorite days are spent in Va Beach painting with great teachers. There's still time for you to sign up for March with Beth Wagner. On March 5th and 6th Beth will give a furniture workshop -- where you can customize a small piece of furniture to match your home's decor -- she can bring out our best creativity!! Everyone goes home with a treasure! From March 7-11 we'll have four fun filled days of Fabric Painting, Roses, Lettering & Backgrounds, and learn prospective with a scene. I have a patriotic heart ... I grew up surrounded by all branches of Military... in my community and my family. We were taught by example to respect and appreciate the service and sacrifices of our soliders - and the price they pay for us to enjoy freedom.

This year we spent July 4th with dear friends at their new home in South Jersey.

It was a real treat to see this community's Bike Parade.

I've just returned from the post office - where I mailed off a box of love to the women of Genesis Shelter in Texas. When I got involved with the Martha Stewart group Dreamers Into Doers back in January, little did I know how much love, support, encouragement, inspiration and joy would come to me from this amazing group of women and their endeavors. One of the spearheads of the group, Terry Grahl of Enchanted Makeovers, -- enchantedmakeovers.org -- has launched a nationwide tour to inspire communities across the land to give a little of their love, encouragement, and inspiration to women and their children who find themselves in a shelter situation due to domestic violence. The focus of this shelter event is "Bringing Back Basics" - helping the women expand on the life skills they use everyday to nurture and sustain their family. There will be cooking lessons, sewing lessons, games and activities for the children - and mother/child lunch program.

In keeping with that theme, I am able to send a hand painted cooking apron which will be given as a door prize, plus potholders with original design art for each woman. One of my favorite quotes on the potholder -- 'Small Cheer and Great Welcome Makes a Merry Feast' (by Shakespeare).

Another of my 'sisters' from the Dreamer group, Rachel Gaffney of Authentic Irish Goods, -- http://www.rachelgaffneys.com/-- will coordinate the cooking segment. Still another Dreamer, Debbie Maddy of Calico Carriage Quilt Designs, -- http://www.calicocarriage.com/ -- will coordinate the sewing lessons part of the event. Many, many other Dreamers have donated time and talent to this event, and the previous ones held this year. Art in Baltimore

The Americans for the Arts Half-Century Summit is going on in Baltimore this weekend. The Summit celebrates the arts during the past 50 years and explores the opportunities the next 50 years will bring. Famous film maker, John Waters, and iconic movie star, Robert Redford, are among the stars showing their support for the arts in education and throughout the community.

I dont have any photos of me with Robert Redford -- but ..... A few years ago I went to a Buddy Deane reunion dance where John Waters was a guest. This picture of me, John, and Evanne Robinson was taken that night. He and Evanne had known each other since high school days when she was a very popular member of the 'committe'. For those of you who may not know, The Buddy Deane Show was the local equivalent of 'American Bandstand' and teenagers all over Baltimore rushed home to catch the show and keep up with their favorite dances and their favorite dancers. Evanne was definitely one of the favorites. John Waters once said in an interview that she was his inspiration for one of the main characters in Hairspray. John Waters never appeared on the show, but he did feature Buddy Deane in a cameo in the Hairspray film.

It gives me a lot of pleasure to be surrounded by pretty things. Some of my favorites are glassware and dishes. This set of dishes always reminds me of a celebration - and if you ever see this pattern for sale - by all means, BUY it for me - my set needs a few more pieces :)

This pretty pale green dish is in the 'Sandwich' pattern

which was popular in depression glass.... But this dish is not depression glass. The pattern is right but this color was not used during the depression years - it came much later. That's ok with me, I love it still.

And I love it even more as a backdrop for my grandmother's two dresser bottles

This collection of glass door knobs started with the ones that came from my husband's mother's house. I've added to the collection over the years. I purposely mixed them all together, so that in our hearts they are all from "Grandmom's House"

I especially love the way light comes through stained glass windows. This one hangs over my kitchen window - it makes doing dishes a pleasure - and its a welcome beacon each time I come home.

and .... these pretty glasses make me happy. I have them in three different sizes -- water, pilsner, and sherry glasses. I had to restrain myself from buying more - I swear, they probably have 8 different sizes!! I figure three is enough (at least for now:)

Cruisin' on the River

Chestertown was lucky enough to be one of the ports on the American Cruise Line's Spirit tour.

Friendly people from all over the US boarded the ship in Philadelphia and arrived in Chestertown last evening.

This morning they set out to explore the town --- Robert Ortiz Studio was early on the tour.

We enjoyed showing them around the shop and giving them a look at what we do. Steve Croker showed the steps he takes to create carved ginko leaves used as accents on many of Robert's designs. He explained the different woods and how they compliment the furniture. He also showed how he uses real leaves as his guide in order to achieve the most authentic detail possible.

Everyone was interested to hear Bob tell about the process he goes through to create such beautiful furniture. He starts by chosing boards from the saw mill that have been cut and dried properly. He uses a jig - essentially a pattern - to cut the pieces. People want to know how long it takes to make a piece of furniture - how many man-hours - but all of Bob's experience, design time, trial and errors go into the making of each piece. Our current project is an entry table with mahogany base and walnut top. The base is still under construction, you can see one leg before the final cut has been made and the other leg shows how it will look when finished. Take note of the 'ribbon' wood grain. The top has two coats of linseed oil finish so far -I applied the second coat today -- it will eventually have five.

Here's a display of Baltimore Painted Screens. This old folk art has been gracing the windows and doors of Highlandtown since the 1920's. Newcomers are always surprised to find that you cant see in from the street - but those inside can see right through.

We enjoyed the cruisers - and look forward to future visits.

Inspiration

Inspiration for me comes in many forms -- an ordinary walk will find me snapping pictures to take home and tuck away until the right idea comes along.

It could be a stroll through the flower district in New York ,

or a walk downtown Chestertown where the trees throw beautiful shadows on the brick sidewalks.

Or it could be the top of a grand old building ..... interesting pictures are everywhere, just waiting for the chance to star in a work of art. Hmmmm - I think I'd better get busy..... Inspiration is calling.

OBX and Sunshine

We just returned from a wonderful visit to OBX -my brother and his wife live there and we arelucky enough to visit at least once a year, sometimes several times. Not only do we enjoy a healthy dose of sea air and sunshine, but we get to spend time with family: looking over old photos, re-telling childhood stories -- laughng, loving and building new memories along the way. This visit was no exception. In between great BBQ (Carolina style, of course), shrimp, grits and birthday cake, we took walks on the beach, scouted out thrift and antique shops, enjoyed the fresh berries from their garden, sipped pina coladas on the deck -- AND watched my brother surf with his new board. You wont be able to miss him in the water now, - that neon orange can be spotted a mile away! He was as excited as I've ever seen him - and we were loving it from the shore, thrilled with every wave he caught!

Love and Marriage

Its wonderful to celebrate a loving marriage. Our good friends, Dick and Ivy, came to visit last week and shared their 54th wedding anniversary with us. John was the Best Man at their wedding, in England, in 1956 - and they honored him again by naming their first child after him. We had a great week. Ivy and I watched 'the boys' remember and tell stories about their days together in the Army, and we could almost see them grow younger with each tale. We spent hours over pictures and the time just melted away. When you see a love that endures over a lifetime you know you are getting to be part of something really special. We are grateful to them for sharing their special day with us - and we look forward to the next visit already!

Going, going, gone ..

Susan and I love to go to Crumpton - and when she came to visit last month that's just what we did. The Dixon Furniture Auction in Crumpton, MD is open every Wednesday through the year, except the weeks of Christmas, New Year's and July 4th.
There is always something for everyone at Crumpton. Here on the inside tables you can find everything from glassware, buttons, lamps, small toys, books, seashells to carvings and small furniture.

In the field outside, the auctioneer rides along in a golf cart, while the crowd follows watching and waiting for their coveted item to come up for bid. You have to keep your eyes and ears open because he moves pretty fast - not to mention how fast he talks! Stay alert and you can win your bid and bring home a 'find' to repurpose into a 'treasure'.

and ... let's not forget the food! This is only a fraction of all that's available. We sometimes go just for the hotdogs - wrapped in soft pretzel dough - they are 'melt-in-your-mouth' 'to-die-for' good! You will also find ice cream, baked goods, roasted chickens, a full scale restaurant, home canned goods, fresh meats of all kinds, and cakes & pastries ... and although we didnt find our 'treasure' in the field this time, we surely did find something sweet to bring home!!

I hope she comes to visit again soon ... my mouth is watering for a pretzel dog:)

DIVAs Give Back

I am fortunate to be friends with a great group of women who gather regularly (?) - or semi-regularly - to talk about design projects, our likes and dislikes in decorating, creating crafts, learning from each other - and always sharing good food and building friendships. We call ourselves DIVAs - Discovering Individual Vision & Ability. Most recently we gathered at Judith's house, starting off with dinner and catch up conversation. Then we unleased our creative energy decorating mirrors we donated to Laura's Home - a women's shelter in Ohio. My friends, Terry Graul and Carolina Martin, have partnered to bring about a makeover of the shelter, building on a theme of "Inner Beauty - A Sparkling Idea from the Inside Out". With that in mind, we used a poem which was a favorite of Audrey Hepburn to inspire us in our crafting

We worked into the evening, still laughing, chatting and thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

Then we wrapped them all and sent them off to the deserving ladies of Laura's Home

Every where I turn there is color to behold! A trip through the Farmer's Market this morning was like walking through a rainbow of flowers.

Back at home we are enjoying the blooms of the pear tree, nectarine tree, and the lilacs! It makes dinner on the patio a feast on every level! What could be better than spring color, dinner al fresca, and a little wine to slow the senses and take it all in??

The Gallery Show

April's First Friday in Chestertown was a wonderful warm spring evening. It seemed like the whole town was out to enjoy the festivities of 'downtown' Chestertown. Cathy and I were thrilled -- so many people came to view our gallery show at PNC Bank! Everyone loved her pastels, and my screens were a hit as well! As is usually the case, about half of everyone was familiar with the history of Baltimore Painted Screens - from either living in Baltimore, or visiting grandparents, relatives or friends there from 'back in the day' when these screens were so popular. The other half were amazed to realize that the paintings were actually on a real window screen! The bank provided wonderful refreshments , and we had a chance to visit with our friends and neighbors who stopped by -- thank you all!!

What A View

We took our first boat ride of the season today -- the view was super. The water was cold, and the air crisp -- but the sun was wonderful. We watched Osprey working on their nests. Max had a chance to chase sticks in the water, and John and I toasted each other and the beginning of spring. Life is good ....

Folks Like Us

Yesterday Cathy and I spent the day hanging our artwork getting ready for the show that opens on Friday, titled "Folks Like Us".   It was a cold, rainy day - not at all what we wish for in Spring. Once we got everything inside we could stay dry for a while. We shuffled her pieces and my pieces, looking for the best arrangement to please the eye. We think we have a great show in the works. Even the bank manager stopped by to say how much she liked our art and how well our pieces work together. That was nice to hear.

We took a break for a late lunch and walked the long way back in the rain, stopping into art galleries and admiring old buildings, budding gardens, and the promise of spring.    Then we had a fresh look at our gallery, made a few adjustments and left feeling confident in our presentation.

We are both looking forward to the opening reception Friday, April 2, from 5-8 pm -- 211 High Street, Chestertown, if you are in the area be sure to come by and say hello   --- I'll have pictures on Friday

DIVA Dinner

Our DIVA (Discovering Individual Vision & Ability) group has been getting together on a sort of regular basis for 4 years now. We all met in a 6 week class on Introduction to Interior Design. When the classes were over we stuck together. We started out discussing design projects, makeover ideas, and DYI lessons. We visited each other's homes, make a variety of crafts - from floor cloths to mosaics & stepping stones - and we always have a great meal!!

This week's meeting with the DIVAs was a cooperative dinner at Marian's house. Marian and Diana coordinated the main dishes for our meal, Marian hosted at her lovely home, and the rest of the group filled in with appetizers, salad, bread and wine!! As usual, we ended up with a feast.

Diana made chicken, & artichokes in bechamel sauce PLUS she made Pots De Creme with Frangelica for dessert! Yum........ Marian made chicken with fennel & onion, with a wine & pine nut sauce. It was so delicious. Then we were seated in Marian's lovely dining room and raised a glass to friendship, good food, and more good times to come.

Thank you, Bob - thank you for the flowers, the gifts, the celebration - and for giving me such a great place to work -- and, thanks Steve -- for wine, friendship, and a helpful spirit always .

Wow - can it really be 11 years already? In a small town even a casual comment can change your life. Back in 1999 when I heard Robert Ortiz was looking for a 'helper', I made a casual remark about how much I admired his work. He makes original design furniture that is so exquisite its a real work of art. Little did I know that I would have the good fortune to work with him and not only see first hand, but also be part of, his amazing creations. He took me in with no experience and taught me how to finish furniture that everyone wants to caress. Along the way he has taught me so much more. He's a capable, kind and patient teacher. He sets high standards for himself and makes those of us who work with him want to rise to our best level too. Every March he indulges me to celebrate my 'anniversary' with the wood shop -- today Bob, Steve and I had lunch, filled with good food, good friendship and lively conversation - in a small town there's always something to talk about --- and sometimes it will change your life.

The Big Show Countdown

Cathy and I are both spending our days preparing for the April Show. I've finished painting, but now I'm concentrating on 'presentation' --- It kind of feels like when I used to dance on stage. Learning the steps was only the beginning - then we had to rehearse the 'style' of the number and the 'staging' of the show.

I painted several new screens for this show - and I cant wait to see how they are received - but painting the piece is only the beginning. Even though I'm very happy with them, I want to present them in a way that everyone can appreciate.

I know Cathy is working on lots of new pieces too. Together we will be hosting the Opening Reception from 5-8 pm - April 2 at PNC Bank, 211 High Street, Chestertown-- come visit with us - cheer us on - and have a glass of wine .. We'll be the two with the biggest smiles (plus name tags:)

Baltimore Screens

If you find yourself strolling the neighborhoods of East Baltimore you will be treated to a unique form of folk art. Ever since William Oktavec painted the first screen in 1913 residents of Baltimore have been displaying these pastoral scenes on their windows and doors. It's a perfect way for the city dweller to gain a bit of daytime privacy. They can have their windows open and allow the breezes in because the people walking by see only the beautiful paintings - while those inside can see straight through.

During the 30's and 40's these screens were so popular it is estimated there were over 100,000, mostly in the neighborhoods of Canton and Highlandtown in East Baltimore. The traditional scenes most often show a red-roofed cottage - and a pond with swans.

I'm very pleased to say that I will have a gallery showing of my Baltimore Screens in Chestertown for the month of April. I'm sharing the show with my friend, Cathy Edwards, who paints wonderful traditional folk art. Join us Friday, April 2 at 6pm for the opening reception --

Sand, Surf ... and Art

Art classes in Virginia Beach are the BEST!! Last week 24 of us, plus our talented teacher, Beth Wagner, all gathered at the beach for a great week of friendship and art classes. Beth guided us through Beautiful Backgrounds, Floral Collage, Roses & Hydrangeas - and Tulips on Lace.
Plus ... Goodie Bags for everyone!!

We get lots of personal attention from the teacher

Beth is there for all our questions, she guides us through each step of our projects, making sure they all turn out beautiful - and we have learned the lessons to take home with us so we can work on our own.

Wednesday morning we had a celebration in the bar to watch the Martha Stewart show - where it was revealed that I won a FABULOUS trip to Singapore!! We toasted Martha, me, each other - and Singapore!! You can see us there in the bar - and behind the bar --(it was before lunch)!

Lovely Lettering

Oh so many years ago I took some calligraphy classes and have enjoyed lettering envelopes for brides and fancy parties ever since. But my love of beautiful handwriting is much older than that. My friend, Becky, and I have been styling our lettering since way back in high school, where we'd meet in between classes and marvel at each other's newest designs. And, guess what ....? She does calligraphy, too - and beautifully. My latest project is lettering envelopes for a dear friend's 50th wedding anniversary party. There's a lot more that goes into such a project than just writing. First, I set up my 'light box' -- which is my glass top dining room table. I cover it in white tissue paper, clamp my light to shine from below, and wash my hands to make sure I dont smudge anything. I practice at least half an hour and then I start writing. I like morning light because there are less shadows and I work for about an hour and half at a time. I like a quiet room - no music, tv or people. My husband finds some place to go so I can concentrate. The finished product is always worth the effort - and the best part is seeing the smile it brings to my customers and friends.

"I'm Not Gonna Lie -- I'm Crafty" -- that's the name of the radio contest I won last week!! The requirement was to use 50 words or less to describe your 'crafty' self. I said "Here goes" and wrote ....

I LOVE crafts! …... I love to do it all --- from Jewel Jeans to stencils, sewing, painted furniture, paper crafts to calligraphy and Baltimore Screens. How fun to find new uses for discarded items, and ---everything goes better with a little sparkle, glitter jewels!! Even me!

So today I had a fun afternoon in Baltimore with a group of women who love all kinds of crafts. We were invited to lunch at Phillips, Inner Harbor by DJ Laurie DeYoung where we had wonderful Maryland Crab Soup, Crabcake Sandwich and cheesecake and coffee. Afterwards we walked the skywalk to the convention center led by WPOC Promotions Manager, Sheila Silverstein. We were greeted by Melanie Bender Little, Show Director of the American Craft Council. She gave us an overview of the show, VIP tickets, and great magazines. There we spent the next several hours browsing an amazing gathering of artisans and crafters. Each one was a wonder of creative talent ... beautiful works of art in wood, glass, fabric - each one breathtaking. We were encouraged to chat with the artists and learn their stories - that was wonderful too. It was an all around great day --- thank you Laurie DeYoung, and WPOC!

Love to Dance!

I love to dance -- and there's nothing better than line dancing at the Senior Center. I had the pleasure of being 'guest teacher' this week at the Senior Center in my hometown. These lovely women - and Arthur - are full of life and make for a fun-filled morning. We had a good time dancing and laughing -- one woman likes to dance to "drinking songs" - her favorite dance is Drinking Champagne. The woman in her 90's loves to play tennis, and does so regularly. One woman likes dances with a little wiggle - probably because she has the best wiggle of us all! And Arthur loves all the women - and we love him. It's been a while since I taught dance - so I said we all stumbled through it together. Actually, we did pretty well - learned a new cha-cha - and danced to our old favorites. Thank you, ladies (and Arthur:) for inviting me to lead the group this week.

Hurry Up, Spring!!!

One of the few times we welcome rain is when it could have been snow instead. So the temperatures hovering about 40 last night and today have brought us a much welcomed rain. The bonus of which is watching our snow steadily disappear! This morning in town it was very clear which side of the street gets the sun - because the other side had 3 times more snow!! We are starting to see patches of ground peek through the snow, and the geese are taking advantage of a new supply of food to get them ready for their long trek home. Although its still about 70% snow, 30% ground - we feel the promise of spring around the corner. The weather man warns us that more winter weather will visit us before Spring makes a permanent landing -- but ........ daylight savings times comes in two weeks --- Spring cant be far behind.

Small Town USA

I REALLY do live in a small town ..... while at the gym this morning I was approached by no less than 3 people congratulating me on winning the trip to Singapore. I was surprised they had seen the show yesterday, because it was pre-empted by the Olympics in this area. NO...... they didnt see the show. One heard the news in the grocery store, one found out at the shoe store (where the whole town buys their newspapers) and the other got the good news at the coffee shop!! Now, THAT is small town America - LOVE IT!!

OK -- so now we can shout it to the world!!

My BIG news was revealed on the Martha Show today - February 19 --- I won a trip to SINGAPORE --- WOW, It's still hard to believe. Here's our group giving a toast to Martha - and a great big Thank You! And another big thank you to my daughter for hosting brunch today, for taking care of the 'techno' part that allowed us to view without commercials - and thank you to all my friends for coming to share this fun moment with me.

I'm currently working with the travel agent from Singapore Board of Tourism to plan the trip. My friend, Eileen, will be joining me - and we think we'll travel in August or September. I'll be sure to let you know!!

Just about 16 hours from right now ....... I will be having brunch at my daughter's house with a group of friends she invited to watch the Martha Stewart Show with us!!! How exciting. My BIG news will be revealed -I'm so excited. I can think of no better celebration than being with my daughter and a group of long time dear friends. We'll be having quiche, salad, crudites, spinach balls - and brownies and coffee! Best of all, we'll be having lots of hugs and plenty of smiles!

Mountains

As I huddle myself inside, trying to stay warm while viewing mountains of snow outside - I am also working on a "mountain" of business ideas. Because I feel strongly that my Jewel Jeans are perfect to wear on stage, I am trying to find a way to present them to those people who regularly appear on stage -- MUSIC STARS and MOVIE STARS!!

I have poured over internet info about getting products placed into celebrity gift bags. I am collecting a "mountain" of email addresses, phone numbers, and Agent/PR addresses. Now ... to find just the right way to present my denim brand. I'm working on beautiful note cards with a glossy photo collage of jean designs, denim bookmarks, sunglass cases - and post cards. I've also ordered a supply of denim tote bags to embellish - some for sale, and some to send as a promotional item to selected celebrities!!

Wish me luck -- wouldn't it be so much fun to see my jeans on somebody like... Halle Berry? Kellie Pickler or Carrie Underwood? Miley Cyrus? Rachel Ray? Kelly Ripa?? If you know anyone, be sure to put me in touch :)

Art Classes are such FUN!!

I wasnt sure I could make it home from the beach, considering all the snow they had in Maryland. But when I woke up Friday morning to a forecast of 3 inches of snow at the Beach, I knew I HAD to make it home. If they got 3 inches, I'd be snowed in for another 3 days!

I was ready to come home and my husband was lonesome. Luckily, I had no trouble whatsoever. I didnt see solid snow on the ground until I reached the Maryland line. Salisbury had a good bit of snow, Cambridge even more, and Easton more. When I turned north on 213 there was even more!! Still, the roads were clear all the way to my driveway - and I was so thankful!!

Art class at the Beach was just great. Everybody arrived - although 3 were one day late because of weather. We painted wonderful projects -- black-eyed susans on Monday, colorful boats on Tuesday, a storefront with striped awning and cottage garden on Wednesday and roses on Thursday. Everyone's finished piece was just beautiful! Ros is a pleasure to be with and a great teacher to learn from. The group rekindled old friendships and made many new ones. The restaurant took good care of us, and the meals were yummy. The hotel provided all we needed - comfortable beds, coffee in the room, warm pool to counter the snow and cold outside, and a place to call home for our stay. Thank you Oceanfront Inn, and thank you Neptune's Restaurant!!

Paralyzing Snow!!! Really??

I've been watching the forecasts all day - in between packing my suitcase and packing my car - to prepare for the art class in Va Beach. My first plan was to let the snow come and then travel after the roads had been cleared - assuming that the beach would only get rain. But as the predictions became heavier and earlier a little panic started to set in.

I stepped up my preparations..... sorted out my warmest clothes, got my snow boots ready (and my dancing boots, too - just in case) and started loading the car today while the sun was still shining. I loaded in the tee shirts, aprons (to paint on), all my paints, brushes, supplies, the goodie bags, and door prizes. I have 10 shop lights 4 feet long that I hang in the art room plus several bags full of miscellaneous supplies, ranging from tape to glitter! I'm all set...

So I'm getting up at the crack of dawn and setting out on my trip --- I think this is going to be an adventure we will all remember for a looonngg time - wish me luck!

Back to Reality

Try as I might, I cannot push the Martha Stewart adventure to the back of my mind so I can get on with 'real life'. How lucky can a girl be?

But ... Virginia Beach art class is quickly approaching, and there are many details to check and double-check before I pack the car. Plus - Old Man Winter hasnt finished with us yet - we are scheduled to get another snow this afternoon - that's on top of the 6-8 inches we got on Saturday!! AND ......... another snow is scheduled at the end of the week. Who would believe that Virginia would get so much snow in such a short time?? I'm keeping my eye on the reports - and getting EVERY thing ready in case I need to dash off and beat the snow. Hubby and his faithful dog will hold down the fort at home.

Art classes at the Beach are really special. Many folks come year after year and we have a great reunion while painting super new projects with Ros. There are always a few new faces (new to me - they usually know Ros) to welcome into our group, get to know, and have fun with. Despite the paperwork, many emails, and all the parts that go into planning these classes (I dont know HOW Larry did so many) -- I just love doing it - and love even more being with the group and, especially, painting with Ros.

Cross your fingers the weather man is wrong this time -- and no wearing your pj's inside out!!!

Dreamers - Day Two!!

Wednesday, Jan 20 - Eileen and I wake to great anticipation for the day ahead. Our Dreamer group had been divided for the day's activities. Eileen dashed off early to be in the audience when Martha's show aired LIVE that day. I lounged over coffee and met my group for our 8 block walk back to MSLO for a guided tour. In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined how fantastic that would be. We were met by Hanna, SVP of Crafts for MSLO - she's been with Martha for 19 years. She was almost as excited to meet us as we were to meet her! We dropped our coats in her office, amid the glitter and sparkle from Christmas decorations they had just removed from the Blair House - official residence of our Vice President. Every where we went MSLO staffers knew about our group and welcomed us with warmth and enthusiasm. We went to test kitchens where new recipes were being tested, peeked in on photo shoots in progress, saw flower arrangements being made and story boards for future issues. We walked by the Macy's line, met the Weddings editor, and the magazine editor - who was generous enough to talk with us for a good while. Emeril Lagasse interrupted lunch at his desk to come and talk with us. We saw new craft products in development and enough glitter to make a girl's heart skip a beat!! And .. the prop room ... OMG what girl wouldnt want a room to hold all her dishes, glasses, cake stands, candle sticks, vases -- you get the idea -- it was Heaven!! We passed by Martha's office and saw the wonderful view of the Hudson River - just as she sees it. With just enough time to grab lunch on the go, we dashed off to the TV studio to be in the audience of the afternoon taping. Alexis T. from Martha's staff put forth monumental efforts on our behalf - we owe her Big Time!!

Once we showed ID, and signed the legal waivers, we were all given 'luggage tags' to fill out with our names and addresses. I knew this had to be a drawing for some kind of prize - luggage perhaps? - and I made sure to write my name very clearly :) There's a great energy leading up to the beginning of taping and the arrival of Martha on set. Joey, the warm up guy, keeps everyone entertained and briefs us on audience protocol -- when to clap, when to be quiet, not to chew gum - turn off cell phones, etc.

And then -- the music begins, Martha comes out and the screaming applause from the audience is genuine excitement!! The theme of this show is all about travel -- tune in Friday, Feb 19 to see my big SURPRISE!!! Let me just say -- everyone in the audience was thrilled with the gifts they received and a few lucky persons were OVER THE MOON with excitement!!

Our Dreamers group was so enriched from the creative inspiration that swirled among us, that we nearly floated on air the rest of the day. Martha and her staff arranged for Co Pizzeria to host our group for dinner -Alexis and 2 other staffers joined us - and MSLO picked up the tab. We all felt MSLO was unbelievably generous during our entire adventure. A couple of group pictures rounded out the evening.

The next morning we had time for a quick breakfast and a dash into a couple of shops before catching the train home -- back to real life - but with a new zest for living and new energy for working, and new friends for life!

HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS!!

If January is any indication, 2010 is going to be one fantastic ride for me. It surely has started off with a bang!!!

Some months ago I joined an online group on Martha Stewart's website. Its called Dreamers Into Doers. It began as a way for Martha to recognize and reward women who have non-profit businesses to help other women and their community. It expanded to women with all kinds of businesses and creative 'dreams'. No more prize money, but a new "Doer" is still picked every week, and the honor and recognition are still wonderful.

Just after Christmas I discovered this group planned to gather in NY to finally meet each other face to face - and to attend a taping of the Martha Stewart show. With the help of Martha's staff they also made plans to make a difference for women living in a domestic violence shelter. Through a flurry of emails and online postings, and with major involvement and help from Martha's staff, we flocked to NY January 19 and 20 for a most fantastic excursion.

My friend, Eileen, and I caught the 5:30 am train from Wilmington, DE and hooked up with Taryn, Holly, and Dawn once we got to NY. We walked to our hotel to store our bags before check in time, only to find the staff so welcoming and accommodating that they checked us in at 9am!! Waiting for us in our room was Lisa's wonderful home made banana nut chocolate chip bread - yum - we ate it right away.

We stowed our luggage and hot footed it off to the MSLO offices. Two members of our group gave fun and informative cooking demos in Emeril Lagasse's test kitchen! Pinch me I must be dreaming. Rachel, who arrived in the US from Ireland in the 1990's, gave us Irish Soda Bread, Bailey's Cheesecake, and Leek and Stilton Tarts - and stirred in great Irish stories along the way. Lisa made her Chocolate Chip Banana Nut Bread and Sourcream Lemon Pound Cake - pretty as a picture in her polka dot apron!

All that yummy food, plus a glorious spread from Whole Foods arrived at Studio A along with us and the women from the shelter. We walked into a perfectly "Martha" room with rows of white tables, with long white cloths, white chairs and a simple vase of multicolored roses on each table. The front wall was a bank of windows looking over the Hudson River with the Statue of Liberty off in the distance - a powerful feeling filled the room right from the beginning.

We filled our plates with food and filled our hearts with inspiration, encouragement and love from the many speakers of the day. Our 'Dreamers' group had lots of messages of hope to uplift the women of the shelter. Each Dreamer had donated gifts to the shelter according to their talents. When Debbie's handmade quilts were presented to three lucky shelter women emotion overwhelmed the room - not a dry eye in the house. We finished the day with smiles, pictures, exchanges of names and numbers - and hugs all around, plus Martha gift bags for everyone!!!
